Fall Edition: Stripes & Scarves

There are only 5 MORE DAYS OF FALL! But it already feels like Winter here in Portland, Oregon.

Going forward with The Burb Girl, a new vision is underway – one that aligns with the changes occurring in my life. After being enlightened on the harsh impacts fast fashion has on our environment,  I couldn’t help but reevaluate my role in it. As a young consumer trying to keep up with the ever changing trends, it is natural to buy into fast fashion – brands like H&M, Forever 21, Cupshe (Yes, all have been featured on my blog before, and yes, all have very cute clothes) are all fast fashion. There comes a point where the demand for new trends exceeds the capacity for ethical fashion. But you must know, despite what the media tells you, there is hope for a sustainable future in the fashion industry. You as a consumer have more power than you think.

There is hope. Here are some of the ways you can decrease your shopping footprint!

  • Consignment shopping
  • Local boutique shopping (also supports your local economy)
  • Online shopping with sustainable brands
  • Research on companies that are doing it right!

The outfit featured below was all bought locally and second-hand, not to mention it features in-style trends from this season. Comment below and flaunt some of your fashion friendly finds!

Falling for Fall: Dolce Vita

As most bloggers will say at some point, sorry for not blogging! I didn’t forget about you, life happens sometimes. But without delay, I have found so many treasures that I would love to share with you all. As I am still working at Nordstrom Rack, I can’t help but flourish in the crazy steals that can be found in most of the rounders.

Suede booties are in. I am no expert on the fashion analysis team, but upon observation, it is safe to say that suede booties are in. TOMS has a wonderful selection that run the in $50-$150 range, depending on where you buy them from. However, as I was impulsively shopping the other evening, I came upon some beautiful, neutral suede that caught my attention… DOLCE VITA. Now normally the price of those booties can scare any shopper away, but I decided to tease myself and try them on without looking at the price tag. “$49.90, am I reading this right?” You can play out the rest… They are now sitting comfortably on my happy feet. Below I have pieced together an outfit I wore this Sunday and broke down the pieces and their prices to show you just how successful you can be on your next shopping adventure.

Falling for Fall: Timberland Edition

Just finished some fall/school/birthday/winter clothes shopping! I am excited to share with you just some of the great finds… I will be sharing the rest with you in a few! But first, let’s acknowledge a brand that has put out superior shoes, specifically boots, since 1952–Timberland. This brand is AMAZING. But I am here to show you that those prices shouldn’t scare you away from experiencing such a quality brand and comfort. Though there are some other cute pieces in the outfit I pieced together, the Timberland boots are by far my fall favorite. Both in price and look! These boots retail at $120 regularly and I found them hiding at Nordstrom Rack for only $60! The leggings are Abound, also featured at Nordstrom Rack for only $10 and are a great addition to the wardrobe. And great news shoppers, Nordstrom is currently price matching in their Juniors and TBD departments and the Rack is currently having their awesome Clear the Racks event that takes an additional 25% off clearance red tags! Go see what treasures you can find!

Falling for Fall: Clearance Edition

The leaves are turning, and so are the clearance racks! This is the time to find those crazy treasures that finally get put out on the floor. Most department stores have already had their back-to-school sales however, don’t let that fool you into thinking you missed out on the best deals if you haven’t done your shopping yet. Most stores know their busiest time of the year will be early fall. From a marketing standpoint, that is when special sales are offered as an incentive to retrieve those shoppers into their stores. But what most people don’t know is that those clothes that were on sale for a ‘special time only’ go on sale a couple weeks following the original sale. No, it isn’t a scam, it is just a marketing strategy. But it’s a win win! If you’re like me, you try and avoid the jam packed aisles labor day weekend and instead go out in the following weeks. And don’t worry, you didn’t miss out on ALL of the sale items. Most stores have an inventory that is just waiting to see the floor. So now is the time… go out and enjoy a peaceful time of shopping and great deals.

Here are my new favorite fall treasures that I discovered in the clearance racks at Nordstrom Rack…

Top: Hinge Sweater $12

Bottoms: Paige Denim $18

Falling for Fall: Marc Jacobs Edition

So as I was rummaging through the deep sea of handbags in the Nordstrom Rack clearance tables, I found a diamond in the rough. It was early in the morning-the best time to shop at the Rack-and there I found the gem. A large cement leather crossbody tote, perfect for all seasons! But what was it doing in the clearance bins? It must have been a mistake? As I reached in the pockets out came a ticket with a retail price of $528.00. I knew it was too good to be true. However, my co-worker grabbed the bag to show me that there was a hidden tag in the the pocket for only $79.20 with matching style numbers meaning it had to be the price! On top of this glorious discovery, Clear the Racks, a frequent Nordstrom Rack sale that offers an additional 25% off clearance items, was taking place! There was no question… $47.52 later and the bag was mine. No this isn’t a ‘rub it in your face post’ where I tell you I found the ONLY handbag of its kind. But rather a post that shines light on the fact there are wonderful deals that are hiding in the clearance bins, and it is a matter of time before you discover them. Nordstrom Rack is a wonderful place where that can happen. Like I said earlier, Clear the Racks is an event that takes crazy discounted items and discounts them even more. If you’re like me, you are always looking for a great deal. This is just one of many places that can offer that!

Below is a picture of my new handbag that is a wonderful, versatile bag for fall! Not to mention the color is so neutral that it can be useful during other seasons as well. When purchasing a handbag, I have found neutral colors to be the best colors. A handbag is a more expensive accessory that typically goes with you most places so trying to piece a not so neutral color with your outfit can be more difficult. You want to get use out of your handbag!

Falling for Fall: Great Pieces at a Great Price!

As the leaves are falling, so are our summer wardrobes. It’s that time of the year where swimsuits get stuffed in the back of drawers, and legs go into hiding. This calls for a wardrobe purge. For some of us, there are clothes that haven’t been touched all summer season. Some of those clothes still carry the price tag, sitting in the back of the closet, ready to be worn. Now the problem is, we keep justifying that purchase by saying ‘I am going to wear that, just not today’ or ‘I know it’s too small now but give me four months and those will be mine’. We’re lying to ourselves. That piece of clothing is nothing more than a dust collector and money thief.

What if we could sell that dust collector and make some money or even better, find something we would wear? We can! And that is the beauty of consignment shopping. The minimalist wardrobe allows you to carry the pieces that you love without neglecting both your closet and your wallet. Falling for Fall is this month’s segment following the great pieces I found through consignment selling and shopping. Enjoy.

The first part of the revamp of the wardrobe always includes the purge. This allows you to see the things you need and the things you don't need. As you can see, I quite a few clothes acting as dust collectors. This picture doesn't include the two garbage bags full of clothes that were donated to the goodwill. That brings me to the next step of the wardrobe purge... you must choose clothing carefully. When choosing clothes to sell at your local consignment shop, you must make sure that what you are selling is what they are accepting in terms of style. Also, the quality of your clothes needs to be up to par for them to consider them in the first place. I learned that no matter how stylish the piece is, they will only consider it if it's in the condition to sell. In preparation for visiting a few of my favorite local consignment shops, I went online to see what they were taking for style... SWEATERS galore. So in the bulky purple bag I stuck a few summer pieces in to see if they would sell, but mainly those dusty sweaters that I had to depart from.

From selling, I earned $45 cash at a consignment store called Buffalo Exchange. Usually consignment will offer 80% in store or 50% cash when you sell. I took the money and ran… but I shopped at another consignment store down the road called Plato’s Closet and earned $22 from selling and turned it into three different outfits. This outfit is a great transitional outfit from summer to fall that only cost me a grand total of $25!

The break down…

Free People Bralette: $14

H.I.P Tropical Sweater: $4

Jessica Simpson Denim: $7

All three items retail at a much higher value given the style, brand and quality. That is what I love about consignment. It’s like stepping into your friend’s closet and trading clothes!

Yesterday I made a profit of 3 stylish new fall outfits (the rest are yet to come) and $28 cash. That is the best kind of shopping! So go explore your closet and see what treasures you can find at your local consignment shop. Below are a few of the local Portland shops that have wonderful selections and great buying methods… Have fun!

Buffalo Exchange: Designer brands and higher prices but great quality. http://www.buffaloexchange.com/

Crossroads: Mix of designer and mainstream with moderate prices and a little more picky when buying clothes. Also very seasonal. http://crossroadstrading.com/

Plato’s Closet: Mainstream clothing, lower prices, easier to sell to. http://www.platoscloset.com/

Red Light: Costume clothing/vintage, moderate prices, range of brands and tougher selling. http://redlightclothingexchange.com/

Silver Lining: Designer brands, higher prices, boutique style. Tougher to sell and seasonal. http://www.silverliningco.com/
